25th - 26th November 2023
Expo XXI, Prądzyńskiego Street 12/14, Warsaw
This year, thanks to the courtesy of the organizers Kama Zboralska and Katarzyna Marciniak, Gaya Lastovjak's greatest work was presented at a separate stand. This is an extraordinary distinction because most of the exhibitors at the fair were galleries and auction houses. The painting titled "Game" hung on a three-meter wall and consists of 21 canvases measuring 40x40 cm. The total size of the artwork - 280x120x6 cm. Along with the presentation of the painting, the artist performed a happening for two days of exhibition. During this time, Gaya made eight casts of the faces also of people in the audience. Happening met with great interest and approval from visitors.
The painting “Game” is based on the idea of never ending painting. During the exhibition, I perform a happening during which I make plaster casts of willing participants so that their faces will later become part of the painting. The composition itself can be interpreted in different ways. It can be seen as a symbol of our reality in which we pass different people every day, and their faces are only an ephemeral image for us. The work also refers to the aesthetic canon of ancient art, showing male and female figures in different shades. And finally, the most important aspect – the game. The artwork aims to show ordinary people who play a kind of game of personal struggle every day. This painting could be a personification of our life, which also resembles a kind of game. Everyday challenges, goals that we set for ourselves, which sometimes end in failure and sometimes in success or victory. Just like in the game. So far, about 85 faces have been created, of which over 60 have been sold in various combinations. This artwork will never end, it will be constantly expanded - says Gaya Lastovjak.
According to the organizers, the Warsaw Art Fair was visited by approximately 10,000 people this year.
